FAQ

Please hover your cursor over each question to read its answer:

  • How much do you charge for ...?
    • For all our customers we will discuss your exact needs and provide you with a written or verbal quotation.

  • Why does my computer need servicing?
    • Computers are similar to cars, although mostly electrical, they have mechanical parts and accumulate dust which acts as an insulator. This causes computers to heat up which without cleaning is likely to cause hardware problems, crashes or failure.

Spyware and viruses also need regular thorough removal.

As you use your computer the hard disk will become unorganised and inefficient. Similarly, they can suffer from damaged sectors which should also be checked and sorted out to avoid potential damage.

The list goes on, including registry problems, driver and BIOS updates etc which all need checking and sometimes updating.

Similarly not servicing is like not servicing your car. It will get worse and slower, potentially crashing and losing data

  • Why is my computer running slow?
    • This can be for a variety of reasons, and not all slowness is abnormal.

Windows sometimes performs its own self-maintenance or virus scans might be taking place. Other reasons can be a lack of memory, hard disk space, or trying to do more with your computer than it can adequately handle.

  • What is a Media Centre?
    • A Media Centre is simply a PC or similar device that is supposed to be the centre of all your modern entertainment.

In conjunction with a suitable TV a Media Centre can be used in place of the following units you may have:
      • Freeview digibox
      • VHS video recorder
      • DVD player
      • CD player
      • Radio

...as well as offering extra features such as internet access, news and weather on demand, digital photgraph slideshows or watching home movies and downloaded content.

It will play all your digital MP3 music and allow you to record digital TV channels. Media Centre comes with a friendly interface and convenient remote control. Read our white paper on Media Centres for more info.

  • What is push email?
    • Push e-mail is sort of like the corporate BlackBerry device. Normal email is an interactive process for most home users (or at least a timed process), whereby the email is retrieved from your ISP to your email client when you tell it to, and the same would be true on a mobile device.

Push email was created to enable your mobile device to get emails from your Exchange server in the same way Outlook would when in the office (ie without any interaction on your behalf, it's simply there). Hence any emails that appear on your inbox at your work computer will also be instantly available on your smart phone.

  • Do I have to pay a lot for good software?
    • Many people don't realise that a lot of software you could use is from something called the open source community, in which volunteers create programs. You don't have to pay hundreds or sometimes thousands for very good quality software unless you know a good reason to do so.

For example, OpenOffice.org is a complete office suite designed to compete with Microsoft Office. In fact it is so good we use it for all our business documents. The cost? Free if you wish to download it, or comparitivly cheap when put together with Ajay Solution's open source DVD, which contains hundreds of programs like that.

  • Why should I backup my system?
    • Simply, if something goes wrong with your computers, we can get the hardware and software back and working again. Even if it means replacing parts or reinstalling a machine, you can get up-and-running again.

Without a regular data backup routine, any loss of data might be permanent. There is not guarantee that data can be recovered when it's lost, but with a backup solution in place you can reinstate your valuable and often irreplacable data.

Being able to restore systems from backup data also greatly speeds up the process of recovery for a business, meaning you can continue working that much more quickly.

At home, this could mean salvaging digital photographs or home videos.

In business, this can mean the difference between staying in business and going out of business.

  • What is a VPN?
    • A virtual private network (VPN) is a private communications network often used by companies or organizations, to communicate confidentially over a public networking infrastructure (e.g. the Internet).

If you imagine having two locations connected with a leased line, but instead a VPN uses the internet as the network and creates a virtual encrypted connection just between your locations.

You may wish to use this to connect multiple offices together to share network resources securely, or for remote working if your employees need to access your network on the move or from home.
